Bulldogs shut out in 2015 MLB Draft

For the first time since 1976, no Mississippi State players were selected in the MLB Draft. It was the only Southeastern Conference program to be shut out in the draft.

The Bulldogs did however have six of its signees (Austin Riley, Gray Fenter, Greg Pickett, Jared PadgettDelvin Zinn and Elih Marrero) picked during the three day event.

Pickett announced via Twitter that he had agreed to terms with the Philadelphia Phillies after being drafted in the eighth round (234th overall) on Tuesday.

Two former MSU players and one former commitment also heard their names called.

Right-handed pitcher Bret Marks, who was with the Diamond Dogs in the fall of 2011, was drafted in the 15th round (453rd overall) by the New York Yankees. Marks transferred to Wallace State (Ala.) Community College and then to Tennessee, where in 13 apperances he posted a 4-5 record as a senior with a 2.92 earned run average, 89 strikeouts and 28 walks in 77 innings.

Third baseman Nick Flair, who played in nine games as a redshirt freshman at State in 2013, went in the 34th round (1,035th overall) to the Los Angeles Angels. Flair led the Bulldogs with a .571 batting average that season with a double and five runs batted in in seven at bats.

Flair transferred to Gulf Coast State (Fla.) College and then to the University of Tampa where he hit .333 with nine home runs and 59 RBIs as a senior.

Also selected on Wednesday was right-handed pitcher James McMahon, who was part of the Diamond Dogs’ 2011 class. McMahon was taken in the 24th round (707th overall) by the Colorado Rockies.

McMahon lettered four-years at Southern Miss and won the 2015 C Spire Ferriss Trophy as the state’s top collegiate player. In 15 appearances as a senior, McMahon was 11-1 with a 1.56 ERA, 60 strikeouts and 22 walks over 92.1 frames.
